Divide the audience into real listening zones before counting speakers. A long room, wide ballroom and outdoor field can need different placement even at the same attendance. Add a speaker only when it solves a real distance, coverage, obstruction or level problem.
Walk every occupied zone with programme speech and representative music. Check for sudden level changes, dead zones, echoes and timing mismatch.
For a deep ballroom, a useful plan might use the main pair for the front tables and a delayed fill pair for the rear zone, with speech clarity tested at the last occupied table.
